National knowledge network to get Rs 910 million

NEW DELHI: An allocation of Rs 200 million – the same as last year – has been made in the 2008-09 budget for the convergence, communication and strategic electronic programme aimed at research and development to help the growth of broadband and convergence technologies.

The allocation for the communication and information technology ministry also includes Rs 7.19 billion for e-governance which helps to make all government services accessible to the common man through newer technologies. The allocation for cyber security is Rs 270 million.

The new National Knowledge Network, initiated to connect knowledge institutions in the country through multiple gigabit bandwidth, has been allocated a sum of Rs 910 million.

The total allocation for the communication and information technology ministry is Rs 17.16 billion in 2008-09 as compared to Rs 14.45 billion in the revised estimates for 2007-2008.
