HONG
KONG: Music Matters, the forum for the music industry in Asia,
released the third annual MTV study results gauging the music
listenership patterns across 12 nations. These list includes,
Hongkong, Singapore, Taiwan, Korea, China, Philippines, Indonesia,
Malaysia, Thailand, India, Australia, Vietnam. The last two
are new additions this year.
Some
of the findings included 53 per cent in the music consumption, 37 per cent increase
in interaction via social networking sites, 49 per cent increase in mobile usage
among others. On the other hand, there has been 36 per cent decrease in the money
spend on buying music and 46 per cent decline in television watching patterns. The
passion for music has increased from 67 per cent in 2007 to 85 per cent this year
and this majorly comprise music lovers aged 15-19 occupying as much as 60 per
cent. India occupies a prime position with 94 per cent, followed by Malyasia with
83 per cent and the last being China with 77 per cent. 95
per cent love western music in Malaysia and India occupies a third last position
with 62 per cent. Western music genre is popular around the globe with 71 per
cent patrons all over and 29 per cent love other Asian pop genres. Among
Indians, 82 per cent like local music and Himesh Reshamiya topped the list followed
by Lata Mangeshkar, Abhijeet Sawant, Kishore Kumar and Sonu Niigaam. Owning
to the fact that music is now digital, 66 per cent are listening to more music
but only 25 per cent pay for their downloads in the past month and 55 per cent
did not pay for their downloads. All over, 81 per cent of Chinese did not pay
for downloaded while 23 per cent of Indians resorted to piracy. In
2007, 78 per cent consumed music via music videos on television, 27 per cent through
computer and 13 per cent via mobile. This year, the consumption of music via computer
increased to 67 per cent and mobile to 38 per cent followed by 86 per cent of
television. Net
has changed video viewing significantly with 32 per cent opting for Youtube, followed
by 16 per cent MTV and 10 per cent iTunes. Consumption
of music using mobile increased with 74 per cent wanting to replace their MP3
with a music phone and 50 per cent downloaded music on their phone recently. The
number of people attending a music concert doubled this year to 36 per cent from
18 per cent last year. In
the year ahead, the number of music lovers will increase with music going more
digital and mobile. |
