MUMBAI: Surging its presence in the Australian market, BBC has signed a deal with Foxtel to have five of its channels on the local pay-TV platform next year.

Under the long-term agreement, BBC Worldwide will deliver two new channels on the Foxtel platform from 2009 - documentary channel BBC Knowledge and children's channel CBeebies.

The BBC has already three channels on Foxtel. One of them is a high-definition channel that was released last weekend with the Foxtel's HD service, and BBC World News.

As part of the deal, it also agreed to take control of entertainment channel UK TV, buying 60 per cent of Foxtel's stake. It also bought 20 per cent stake of the production company FremantleMedia for an undisclosed amount

Based out of Sydney, Foxtel is 50 per cent owned by Telstra and 25 per cent owned by Consolidated Media Holdings and News Corp.
