MUMBAI:
The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has reiterated the fact
that it will be picketing the Golden Globe Awards.
The
event is scheduled to take place on 13 January 2008. In India,
it will air on Star World; in the US, it will be on NBC.
In
an official statement, the WGA says, "The WGA has great
respect and admiration for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association
(which organises the event), but we are engaged in a crucial
struggle that will protect our income and intellectual property
rights for generations to come.
"We
will continue to do everything in our power to bring industry
negotiations to a fair conclusion. In the meantime, we are
grateful for the ongoing support of the Hollywood talent community.
Many
stars would be reluctant to cross the picket lines if NBC
and Dick Clark Productions, which produces the Golden Globe
Awards, do not reach an interim agreement with the WGA. They
support the guild's demands for a fairer share in new media
revenues.
The
WGA also had a discussion with talk show host Jay Leno. They
clarified to him that writing for The Tonight Show
constitutes a violation of the guild's strike rules.
Moreover,
the guild expressed disappointment on US presidential hopeful
Mike Huckabee's appearance on The Tonight Show.
"The
Writers Guild is disappointed that Mike Huckabee crossed the
WGA picket line at NBC. We welcome the statements of support
he has made for striking writers, but we ask him to respect
our picket lines in the future and urge the media conglomerates
to return to the bargaining table to make a fair deal that
will put writers and the entertainment industry back to work,"
the statement says.
