MUMBAI: According to research released by television format creator and distributor FremantleMedia, broadcasters globally have seen a marked improvement in both the volume and success rate of game show formats this season.

However, variety and talent shows continued to dominate prime time schedules and were the most successful genre of the season in terms of their audience performance.

The most successful global entertainment format of 2007 was the American game show Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader, which entered 22 new territories in eight months, making it one of the fastest global roll-outs ever. The most successful talent show format was Got Talent, which was sold to more territories this year than any other variety or talent format; it is also the UK's highest-rated entertainment show of the year.

In the UK, four of the top five highest-rated entertainment series of the year were talent shows: X Factor, Britain's Got Talent, Dancing On Ice and Strictly Come Dancing.

Reflecting the renewed demand for game show formats, territories such as the US and Netherlands grew their share as the originator of global formats, and now account for 21 per cent each of the share of global formats in total.

The UK remained the main originator of global formats accounting for 33 per cent of the total in 2007. The roll-out of global formats is getting faster, with broadcasters increasingly seeking tried and tested formats with a proven track record of success. Almost half of all new variety and talent titles launched across the five key TV markets have gone above expectations and exceeded the average share for each of their broadcasters.

FremantleMedia CEO Tony Cohen says, "The UK is still as strong as ever and the main originator of global formats, but it is interesting to see that the speed of global roll-out is still accelerating. The US market had a growing demand for entertainment formats, something which we expect to see even more of in 2008 and a trend which the writers' strike issue has the potential to exaggerate.

"Overall last year was a great one for talent shows. We are looking forward to their continued success in 2008. Shows like X Factor and Got Talent offer broadcasters something of enormous value - great TV brands and a bankable audience. 2007 was a great year for the UK, a year when it again proved itself as a great source for travelling brands. The UK's audience figures for entertainment shows speak for themselves. 14 of the top 15 entertainment shows in the UK are global success stories."

Variety & Talent Shows Dominate: Season-on-season the success rate of new variety and talent launches has increased. Nearly half of all new variety and talent titles launched across the 5 key TV markets have exceeded the average share of their broadcasters.

Successful new launches this season include Britain's Got Talent, which currently ranks as the UK's highest rated entertainment show and The X Factor in The Netherlands which airs on RTL4.

Improved Success For Game Shows: The 2006-07 Season has also seen the return of the game show. Season-on-season there has been a 30 per cent increase in the number of new game show launches across the 5 key TV markets.

34 per cent of all new game show launches exceeded their broadcaster's share - this is higher than the market average of 27 per cent across all genres.

Key game show launches this season includeAre You Smarter than a 5th Grader?, which ranks as the highest-rated new launch in the US, 1 vs. 100, PokerFace, Don't Forget The Lyrics and The Singing Bee.

Factual Programming Remains Strong: In terms of volume, new factual programming remains strong, accounting for nearly 50 per cent of all new primetime launches.

However, factual launches are also the least successful in comparison to new entertainment and scripted titles.

Mixed Results For Scripted Launches: The total number of new scripted series fell by nearly 20 per cent across the 5 key TV markets season-on-season. Mini-series proved the best performing of all new scripted launches with a 50 per cent success rate down from 68 per cent last season.

The two-part German drama Tornado was the best performing new drama launch this season. The most disappointing genre of the season has been sitcom, with only 3 of the new launches beating their broadcaster's average.

Low Success Rate For New Series: Across TV markets, only 27 per cent of new primetime launches exceed their respective broadcasters' primetime average share. The success rate of new launches ranges from just 13 per cent in the merciless US market to 51 per cent in the more cautious French market.

Global Formats Demonstrate A Similar Trend To New Launches: Game show titles have been the most successful global formats of 2007, occupying the top three positions as the most-travelled formats of the year. At no.1 is Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader, which has launched in 22 territories so far this year.

Variety and comedy formats have also proven successful during 2007, with Got Talent travelling to nine new territories and the comedy show Thank God You're Here also entering a further nine. FremantleMedia adds that it is responsible for 30 per cent of the top ten travelling formats of 2007.

Origin Of Global Formats: Looking at the origin of global entertainment formats, although down year-on-year, the UK accounted for 33 per cent of this market during the first nine months of 2007, with the Netherlands recovering to 21 per cent and the US rallying to a recent annual high of 21 per cent.

The Dutch and US growth during 2007 can be attributed to the recent success of their game show formats.

UK Independents Key Suppliers: The number of travelling formats from UK broadcasters has declined year-on-year.
Independent producers continue their dominance, supplying 88 per cent of all UK-originated formats.

Newer Formats Roll-Out Faster: As broadcasters demand the next big format the speed at which formats are being rolled out around the world is also increasing.

New entertainment formats such as Thank God You're Here and Got Talent launched in a total of 14 and 11 territories, respectively, within 18 months. New game show roll-out has also increased with Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader entering 22 territories in 8 months.
