MUMBAI:
US broadcaster NBC's sitcom The Office and HBO's long-running
gangster saga The Sopranos triumphed at the Screen
Actors Guild (Sag) awards.
The
Office and The Sopranos won for best ensemble in
a comedy and drama series, respectively. In India, the awards
ceremony will air on Star World tonight at 8 pm.
Jenna
Fischer, who spoke on behalf of the cast of The Office,
thanked the crew and mentioned that the cast cannot wait to
get back to work on the show. The Sopranos recently
completed its run on HBO. One of its stars Tony Sirico says
that the award was a hell of a way to go. He noted that the
cast had worked hard on the show over the years and so the
recognition humbles them. Edie Falco and James Gandolfini
also won for their work on the show.
Charles
Durning who won the lifetime achievement award said, "Over
50 years ago, I had the honour of working with some of the
best actors, directors and writers in our industry. Its
been a dream come true. A dream that began when I watched
the movies of the great character actors of my time."
On
the film front, British thespians Daniel Day-Lewis and Julie
Christie won for their roles in There Will be Blood
and Away from Her, respectively. Day-Lewis dedicated
his trophy to fellow actor Heath Ledger who passed away recently.
Julie
Christie paid tribute to the vision of Sarah Polley who directed
Away from Her. The award for ensemble went to No
Country for Old Men whose star Javier Bardem won for supporting
actor. The award for supporting actress went to screen veteran
Ruby Dee for American Gangster.
