Tax abatement on computer, TV equipment ahead of budget

NEW DELHI: The government has announcement abatement of the rate of central excise on several items related to computers and televisions between 22 to 25 per cent.

The two notifications prescribing applicable rate of abatements for the purpose of payment of central excise duty on the basis of retail sale price announced by the Central Board of Excise and Customs are to come into effect from tomorrow, 25 January.

While the Central Excise is to be fixed at 24 per cent of retail sale price for set top boxes for TV sets, it will be 24 per cent for STBs for gaining access to internet.

The rate will be 25 per cent of retail sale price for Printer whether or not combined with the functions of copying or facsimile transmission, Ink cartridges, with print head assembly, Modems (modulators - demodulators) , and monitors of a kind solely or principally used in automatic data processing machine.
