DELHI: The Bollywood Group, which is known for its annual
film, music and fashion awards, is entering the field of television
production with two reality shows - Rock Da Desiz and
Whoopsi Desi.
This
expansion into TV is part of a larger strategy to develop,
create and distribute content in other areas of media and
entertainment, according to Bollywood Group VP of TV production
Sharad Wala.
"Our
TV production has been set up as a creative, innovative and
aggressive TV production company that operates on a flexible
business plan, which allows us to partner with the best cutting-edge
executives in the TV landscape. Bollywood TV Production will
also serve as a distributor and licensor of its products,"
said Wala.
Despite
being a nascent TV production house, weve brought together
a team that boasts experience and a natural genius and creativity
that rivals some of the most established production houses.
At launch, we aim to bring a fresh and innovative approach
to the industry, focusing on South Asians abroad, he
added.
Rock
Da Desiz is a programme based on Indian films, music,
dancing and fashion which are already the cultural lifeblood
of South Asians living around the world. However, since South
Asian culture is also making enormous dents in the international
entertainment arena, this programme is being launched and
will be set in a dance club environment in New York.
Young,
fashionably dressed dancers will gyrate to the most popular
songs. The programmes focus on individual performers,
in contrast to the ensemble dancing more common in televisual
presentation, will give it an electrifying flavour. It is
expected that Indian, American, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Indo-Caribbean
and other content in this production will be exposed worldwide.
Full-time
LA-based standup comedian Rajiv Satyal, who hosted the 2007
Bollywood Music and Fashion Awards and AVS, is hosting the
comedy show entitled Whoopsi Desi. The format will
pay homage to all the genres of comedy including segments
of standup, sketch, mockumentaries/weekly news, street intercepts,
etc. As Satyal has worked with the majority of Indian American
comedians, he hopes to feature many of his hilarious friends
in the upcoming programme.
It'll
be a whirlwind of activity and the chai will be intravenous
- that'll be the rule at Whoopsi Desi, said Satyal.
