MUMBAI:
AXN, the action and adventure channel, kicks off The Contender
Asia, the Muay Thai (kickboxing) reality competition series
starting 16 January every Wednesday at 10 pm.
The
Contender Asia is the Asian version of the twice Emmy-nominated
show The Contender that hit the TV screens in 2005.
As
opposed to western boxing, MuayThai, also referred to as the
"art of the eight limbs," involves the use of hands,
shins, elbows and knees, to knock the opponent out.
The
Contender Asia is the first international reality TV show
to be shot completely in Singapore. The show was filmed live
in front of an audience including celebrities like Jason Scott
Lee and Daniel Henney in late 2007.
Created
by the Mark Burnett of Survivor fame, The Contender
Asia will have 16 aspiring Muay Thai movers and shakers
from all over the world, all already champions in their own
respective countries.
The
champion of the series will get a cash prize of $250,000.
The
16 Muay Thai heavyweights include a current World Muay Thai
junior middleweight champion from Thailand, a former IFMA
Australia and Oceania middleweight champion from Australia,
a Swiss Muay Thai Champion, and more champions from Singapore,
Australia, USA, Scotland, France, Sweden, Russia and the UAE.
Jaymee
Ong will host the show with the world Muay Thai council vice
president Stephan Fox.
