MUMBAI:
Global Infrastructure major GMR Holdings Ltd has unveiled
the name and logo for Delhi's IPL team - Delhi Daredevils
- at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium.
GMR
zeroed in on the name "Delhi Daredevils" after conducting
a city-wide SMS campaign, which involved Delhites sending
in their recommendations on the naming of the franchise.
Delhi
CM Sheila Dixit, and Delhi and District Cricket Association
executive committee president Arun Jaitley were the chief
guests at the launch ceremony.
GMR-IPL
CEO Yogesh Shetty said, "Delhi is a city of fearless
passion. Delhi is intense, powerful, fearless, daring, relentless,
brave, dominant, dynamic and fiery. The name Delhi Daredevils
represents the same spirit, character and personality. The
team will be known for its resilience, passion, daring and
go-getter attitude."
The
DLF IPL chairman and commissioner Lalit Modi said, "I
am certain that GMR will create an enduring cricketing legacy
for all of Delhi to be truly proud of in the years to come.
The Kotla and the DDCA are set for some truly adrenalin-packed
action in the months ahead."
GMR
Holdings CEO Srinivas Bommidala said, "We would like
to promote sports talent especially at the grassroots level.
The GMR group has been always serious about its social responsibilities
and promoting sports is an integral part of that initiative."
Outlining
the reason for Hyderabad-based GMR group's involvement with
Delhi cricket, senior director of GMR group B Vanchi said,
"Our association with Delhi cricket will not only support
GMR's brand salience at the Delhi airport, it is a part of
a much larger social cause."
The
Delhi Daredevils will play their first game at the Kotla against
Team Jaipur on Saturday 19 April. The team will then travel
to Hyderabad on 22 April to play the Deccan Chronicle-owned
team in its first away fixture. The next away fixture is against
the Mohali team on 27 April, with the team coming home again
on 30 April to play the Vijay Mallya-owned Bangalore team
at the Kotla. The Delhi Daredevils will then travel to Chennai
(2 May) and then to Mumbai (5 May) for their away fixtures.
