MUMBAI:
The movie acquisition business is taking a new turn. Being
made to pay higher prices, broadcasters have started syndicating
their content to rival networks.
The
latest is Star India which has done a deal with Filmy, the
movie channel from the Sahara stable. Among the lot being
lent: Rang De Basanti and Honeymoon Travels Pvt
Ltd which Filmy will air in February.
Says
Star India SVP of strategic planning and commercial Sameer
Rao, "Apart from these two movies, we are in discussions
to syndicate other titles."
Star
had earlier acquired these titles from UTV Motion Pictures
and Excel Entertainment.
Admits
Filmy business head Shailesh Kapoor: "With the number
of players increasing and films being limited in the market,
this kind of business model is very feasible. We have done
a deal with Star for a few titles. The films will stay with
the channel either for two or three airings, depending on
how big the title is."
Filmy, in turn, has syndicated titles like Abra Ka Dabra
and Chota Chetan to kids channel Pogo.
Earlier,
Sony Entertainment Television (Set) India had syndicated 70
movie titles - including Omkara, Partner and Kaho
Na Pyar Hai - to 9X, on a one-screening and one-repeat
basis.
