MUMBAI: Sahara One, the flagship channel from the Sahara stable, is set to go in for a revamp in the next two months.

As part of this renewed thrust, Sahara One is planning to launch three fiction shows in the weekday prime slot. “We are planning to revamp the entire programming of the channel,” said Sahara One business head Nilanjana Purkayastha. The move assumes significance with the general entertainment channel (GEC) turf getting tougher as new players are posing stiff competition to the established ones.

The channel intends to increase its audience base by tapping the youth as well through the new offerings.

Besides, the channel is also launching a dance-based reality show Saas V/S Bahu which will kick off on 25 August. Airing from Monday to Thursday, the show is produced by Swastik Pictures. It will see 30 on-screen Saas Bahu competing and proving their mettle in dance competition.

Saas V/S Bahu is a stepping stone for our new offerings,” added Purkayastha who is also incharge of the channel's programming.

Commenting on the show, Purkayestha said, “The key to any reality show is the concept that gives the audience a reason to watch. While conceiving the reality show we were pretty sure that it was not going to be just another of those song –and–dance shows where TV stars get together and shake a leg.

The premise of the Saas–Bahu conflict has become so deeprooted in our audience’s psyche that it has become a genre of its own."

Aruna Irani and Longinus Fernandes of have been roped in as the judges for the show.

Two teams each of 15 popular TV saas and 15 popular TV bahus will compete with each other for 11 weeks.

On being asked if a one-hour reality show on daily primetime will become too huge a risk, Purkayastha said, “A reality show does not become a habit during weekends even if it reaches to a larger audience. With the help of Saas V/S Bahu, we want to create a habit among our audiences and going further, on the back of it we will launch some fiction shows at primetime.”

Citing an in-house research, the channel had adopted a programming strategy of presenting viewers with regressive storylines. As a part of which, shows like Main Aisi Kyun Hoon, Doli Saja Ke and Ghar Ek Sapna were launched.

“Regressive is a subjective term. A show does undergo different storylines at a time but as a new strategy, our motive is to not just tap the housewives but also the youth,” added Purkayastha.
