DELHI: Indian media is no exception in the way it sensationalises
occurrences of drug-taking among sportspersons and this is
a global phenomena, says former Olympian Linford Christie.
It
is unfortunate that while highlighting such cases, the media
tends to ignore all the good things happening including the
achievements by other sportspersons, Christie said at a media
interaction here.
He
said it was obvious that bad things sell better on the media
than the good things.
In
this context, he did not find it surprising that the media
particularly the television media - had played up Indias
gold medal win at the Beijing Olympics.
While
lauding the coverage given by news media to sports events,
he urged the media in also helping to find raw talent from
all over the country. He said merely having the budget or
infrastructure was not enough if there wasn enough talent.
He
opposed the entry of cricket in the Olympics saying it should
be an event for individual excellence and not that of a team
of eleven players. Cricket was a game while Olympics was about
sports, stressed.
Christie,
who has just returned from Beijing where a sportsperson trained
by him was participating, is in India to present in-depth
sports programming relating to the Olympics on NewsX.
