MUMBAI: The DLF Indian Premier Leagye (IPL) has announced that the total prize money for the inaugural edition of the league is Rs 120 million.

The winning team will earn Rs 48 million. The runners-up will be richer by Rs 24 million, while the two losing semi-finalists will each earn Rs 12 million for their efforts.

The total prize money will then further be divided amongst the other teams. The team finishing fifth will collect Rs 8 million, while the sixth finisher will earn Rs 7 million. The team finishing seventh on the league table will get Rs 5 million while the team that finishes last will earn Rs 4 million.

IPL chairman and commissioner Lalit Modi says, “The Rs 48 million winner's purse makes the DLF IPL truly one of the richest events for a domestic Twenty20 league anywhere in the world. With just a few days left until the first ball is bowled in Bangalore, the excitement is almost palpable and India, as indeed cricket lovers across the world, cannot wait to see who will emerge the victor on 1 June.”

The IPL kicks off on 18 April with the match between Shah Rukh Khan’s Kolkata Knight Riders and Dr. Vijay Mallya’s Bangalore Royal Challengers at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.
