NEW DELHI: Communications and Information Technology Minister A Raja has asked the Department of Telecom to form a focus group and deliberate on innovative methods to make an action plan to bring broadband connectivity to rural areas at a much faster rate than presently envisaged.

He emphasized the need to develop telecom infrastructure at a fast pace as it went hand in hand with the economic development of the country. The Minister was speaking at a function to release the Compendium on Next Generation Networks here today. India which is well known for its IT talent base could use ICT technologies to advantage.

With the government's target of 250 million telephones by 2007 likely to be achieved in advance, the industry has set a new target for itself of achieving 500 million telephones by 2010.
