Discovery Channel presents a continuous six-hour environment-dedicated programme
on the World Environment Day (5 June), from 12 noon to 6 pm. The
programmes will highlight a range of issues and developments that have led to
environmental crisis like the anatomy of Mount Tambora's eruption, women of Garhwal
who started the Chipko movement by hugging trees to prevent cutting of trees in
the Himalayas and many more. The
show will also study the crisis ravaging the population of elephants in Zimbabwe
and reveal the rare conservation story of Gir lions in Gujarat. Capturing diverse
environmental issues impacting India, the programme examines the changes in India's
weather patterns, sea levels and increased frequency of extreme weather events.
Discovery Networks India EVP and MD Deepak Shourie said, "The world is literally
on the brink of a catastrophe of an unimaginable magnitude. Alarmist posturing
will not help: we need genuinely tough action on all fronts: technological, social,
political and, of course, commercial. Discovery Channel sensitises people about
the delicate balance that needs to be struck between the process of development
and the need to save the environment. We owe it to ourselves and to the generations
to whom we will bequeath this fascinating planet." The
line up of programmes include Daughter
of the Earth: Vandana Shiva at 12 noon This programme travels through
India, from the mountains in the North to the temples and seashores of the South,
with Vandana Shiva, a trained nuclear physicist, as the guide, and presents its
cultural and biological diversity and the impending challenges. India's
Wild Dogs: The Wild Bunch at 12:30 pm The show tells about the Wild Bunch
is a group of co-operative predators. However, India's Wild Dog or dhole has an
image problem and a reputation which needs a serious overhaul. . Menziwa's
Children: The Elephants of Zimbabwe at 1:00pm Menziwa is a young African
ranger given the charge of one of the world's largest families - the elephants
of Zimbabwe. In this episode, Menziwa finds the political crisis is having a toll
on his elephant family. Climate Change: An Untold Story at 2:00pm
This episode captures diverse environmental issues impacting India, the programme
has been produced by four young Indian filmmakers. Cherub
of The Mist at 3:00 pm The programme unravels the mystery behind the secretive
life of the little cherub of the treetops and highlights the irresistible charms
of the red panda, also known as the fire cat. The
Last Lions of India at 4:00 pm This programme travels across the thorny
forests of Gir in Gujarat which are the last and only stronghold of the Asiatic
Lion, a species that once stretched from the west across to Asia to as far as
Greece. The Year without summer at 5:00pm This programme
explores the Mount Tambora whcih unleasehed a a volcanic eruption on 10 April
1815 and is believd to have triggered a worldwide climate change. |
