World Space revives Gujarati folk theatre

MUMBAI: In an attempt to revive and popularise Gujarati folk theatre form, World Space's Gujarati radio station Radio Umang will feature recordings of Bhavai theatre form from 25 June to 1 July at 9 am.

The Vesh-Bhavai festival will see interviews with performing Bhavai legends like Ghanysham Nayak and Lili Patel, debates with researchers and scholars, special shows on the various aspects of the dying art form, contests, celebrity endorsements and interesting little-known facts about this form and its evolutions.


Artist like Rupa Divatia, Nisarg Trivedi, Archan Trivedi, Hina Trivedi will perform in the festival. The artist are trained under the guidance of Bhavai legend, Chimanlal Nayak.


Bhavia is a 14th century rural theatre form of Gujarat, which mixes entertainment and information. Each Bhavai performance takes up issues faced up by the common man in its typical satirical manner.
The language of Bhavai is a blend of Gujarati, Hindi, Urdu, and Marwari.

World Space senior programming director Kathik Vaidyanathan said, "Through such shows, we attempt to popularise culture and flavour of the almost extinct theatre, art and music back. The Bhavai theatre form was used in Hum Dil Chuke Sanam, though people are unaware of it."
