MUMBAI: Viacom's kid's channel Nickelodeon will soon reduce the use of its licensed characters on packaged foods that do not meet stipulated nutritional standards. This policy will come into effect from January 2009.

According to a Reuters report, the company stated that its new licensing agreements will have to meet dietary guideline criteria established by its market partners, and be based on governmental standards.

This move comes in the wake of large multinational companies, including McDonalds and Walt Disney, curbing junk food advertising targeted at children below 12 years of age, to address the growing problem of childhood obesity.
