NBC Universal sets up unit to create local programming in global markets

MUMBAI: NBC Universal has set up a new original content unit within the NBC Universal Television Distribution group to develop and create local programming in global markets. The unit will work with local media companies.

CNBC Universal Television Distribution group is responsible for the global distribution of NBC Universal product to all forms of television throughout the world.

According to NBC Universal Television Distribution EVP Frederick Huntsberry, the new unit will cater to the clients' diverse programming needs. "NBC Universal is committed to providing them with complete programming solutions that go beyond just traditional program licensing," he has been quoted in media reports as saying.

NBC Universal Television Distribution executive VP of business operations and sales strategy Jerry Petry has been tasked with the responsibility of monitoring the new initiative.

The new international production unit will exploit NBC Universal's existing library assets through scripted and non-scripted format sales. It will also create, develop and produce new local content outside of the US. The unit aims to tap into NBC Universal's library of more than 50,000 hours of TV programming and 4,000 feature films.

Some of this new content may also be offered on a traditional finished program sale basis internationally, and the international production unit will also look for opportunities to import scripted and non-scripted programs and formats for adaptation by U.S.-based divisions of NBC Universal, add reports.
