Trai publishes list of pay, FTA channels

NEW DELHI: Bowing to the industry's reluctance to publish individual rates of pay channels, the broadcast regulator has now decided to only list on its website a list of pay and free to air channels.

In a statement issued today, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) said "keeping in view the divergent opinion of stakeholders", it has decided to "publish for the present" only information relating to channels that were free to air (FTA)as on 26 December 2003 and those that turned pay subsequently, along with the introduction of new pay channels after 2003.

Trai admitted that a suggestion was received to the effect that prices charged by the broadcasters should be widely published in print and electronic media and put on the regulator's website for transparency.

The suggestion was examined, along with the stakeholders like broadcasters and cable operators, in the context of transparency and the need to keep business-related information confidential.

The latest information posted on Trai's website is based data furnished by broadcasters in terms of para 4 of the Tariff Order of 1 October 2004.
