MUMBAI: BBC World, the BBC's international 24-hour news and information television channel, has promoted Amit Upadhyay to head distribution and business development, South Asia.

Upadhyay will be based in Mumbai and will be responsible for developing distribution plans and strategies for the South Asian region, according to an official release today. He will be responsible for maximising and building on BBC World's current distribution base and identifying business development opportunities in the region.

Upadhyay has been an integral part of the distribution team with BBC World since 2001 and was the regional manager of network development for the western region of India. Prior to joining BBC World Amit worked with Star TV.

Commenting on the appointment, Gerry Ritchie, says: "I congratulate Amit on his well deserved promotion. The Indian distribution market is very dynamic and evolving at a rapid pace. This key position will allow us to have the most effective structure to strengthen and develop our distribution ties and lead the channel to greater growth and success.''
