Anupam Kher is CBFC chairman

MUMBAI: Veteran actor Anupam Kher has been chosen the new chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). This was announced in New Delhi by Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad today.

Kher takes over from 'acting' censor board chief and former Bharatiya Janata Party MP Arvind Trivedi, who had pitched in when former chairman Vijay Anand resigned last year under controversial circumstances.

Anand had put in his papers in July 2002, after the then union information and broadcasting minister Sushma Swaraj turned down his proposal to allow selected

theatres to screen pornographic films.

Kher, who made his directorial debut last year with a box-office turkey Om Jai Jagadish produced by Vashu Bhagnani, is known as a brilliant actor. He has won special accolades for his performances in films like Saaransh, Karma, Darr, Lamhe, Daddy, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge and Dil among others.

Kher was offered the post after 'young' octogenarian Dev Anand turned it down last week. Though Anand preferred not to state a reason for his refusal, it was apparent that his brother's abrupt ouster from the same post last year was still playing on his mind.

Meanwhile, a Press Trust of India (PTI) report quoted Prasad as saying that the government plans to review CBFC guidelines for which a task force will be set up soon.
