Glitz, glamour, glitches at MTV Immies 2003

MUMBAI: It was its big event of the year and MTV pulled out all the stops yesterday.

From the legendary Lata Mangeshkar and composer uncomparable AR Rahman, who both received awards, to international acts like the toy boy group Westlife and the desi rock group Euphoria, there was a mix and match on show.

Still rule the roost

While the display of the fusion flag - the tricolor and the moon emblem - during the Pakistani band Junoon-Euphoria gig did a strike few chords, it was the felicitation of Lata Mangeshkar's invaluable contribution to the world of music that seemed well timed. Unfortunately, nobody seemed to care enough to give her a standing ovation.

With Saif Ali Khan and Cyrus Broacha as the hosts, smart wisecracks were the order of the day.

Viva: Dolled up for a musical cause

The Immy for Best Detection Indian Music Industry Team for the Year 2003 went to Ram Kripal Singh (DSP Rtd) and Bindeshwari Singh (Sr Inspector Rtd). They were feted as the best performing anti-piracy officers

The best male and female singer awards were bagged by Sonu Nigam and Chitra; Adnan Sami took home the best pop album awards.

No prize for guessing who the Immies' best composer award went to! It was the talented A R Rahman, who incidentally is AirTel's ambassador.

Bappi da: 'Mujhko bhi lift Karade'

Westlife and Nora Jones took away the International awards.

MTV Immies, which is scheduled to air on 14 December at 9 pm, wasn't all sugar and spice. The event had its share of glitches. One was Sonu Nigam's excited thank you speech, where he thanked Karan Johar, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and other members of Kal Ho Naa Ho team instead of the Saathiya team, which helped him bag the awards.
