According to government officials, the Cable TV (Networks) Regulation
Amendment Bill 2002 (which aims at facilitating addressability in
Indian cable homes through implementation of CAS) could not be taken
up for discussion today though Monday happens to be the day allotted
to information and broadcasting ministry in Rajya Sabha for issues
related to its ministry.
"It looks as if CAS would not be discussed tomorrow also as I&B
minister Sushma Swaraj is slated to go to Gujarat tomorrow for state
election campaigning," a government official told indiantelevision.com
early evening today.
The I&B minister also laid some papers on the table of the House,
but they did not pertain to CAS.
The Opposition dominated Rajya Sabha has been saying that there
should be a discussion on CAS before it is okayed by the House.
At the time of getting CAS listed on the agenda of Rajya Sabha
last week, the government had also said that there would a three-hour
discussion on the issue.
Most of last week, CAS could not be taken up for discussion because
other issues like Gujarat dominated the proceedings of Rajya Sabha.
