MUMBAI:
ESPN International has acquired the exclusive telecast rights
in Latin America and the Pacific Rim for the Dutch First
Division Football.
According to the new multi-year agreement, ESPN International
will televise one Dutch First Division match per weekend
to more than 50 countries and territories throughout Latin
America and the Pacific Rim. The Dutch League is usually
is one of the highest scoring leagues in Europe, according
to an official release. The Dutch First Division includes
three traditional powers - Ajax Amsterdam, PSV Eindhoven,
and Feyenoord Rotterdam - all of whom collectively boast
11 European titles.
Current League and Cup champions Ajax is one of only four
European clubs to have captured all three major European
trophies - the European Cup, UEFA Cup, and UEFA Cup Winners
Cup. Feyenoord captured Europe's second biggest title in
2002 - the UEFA Cup. Many world-class players have played
in the Dutch League, including Brazil’s Romario and Ronaldo,
Denmark’s World Cup star Jon Dahl Tomasson, and Holland’s
Patrick Kluivert. More than a dozen Latin Americans currently
play in the Dutch League, including Brazilans Wamberto,
who has been an important player for Ajax the past few seasons,
and Leonardo, who helped Feyenoord secure the UEFA Cup.
The
acquisition of Dutch First Division Football bolsters ESPN
International’s roster of European football programming
that also includes the Spanish Premier League and UEFA Champions
League. ESPN International wholly owns or has equity interest
in 25 networks outside of the United States, says the release.
ESPN International transmits in 11 languages (Arabic, Cantonese,
English, French, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin,
Portuguese, and Spanish) to over 145 countries and territories
and is distributed to nearly 120 million homes around the
world.
