| MUMBAI:
The Indian Premier League (IPL) and the news channels have made some headway but
the wrangling over archival footage continues. The
real thorn in the dispute is over the number of shows that the channels can launch
around IPL and how much of footage they can consume. As
the IPL is a big money-spinner for the news channels, they have lined up several
shows to tap mass audiences. CNN IBN and IBN7, for instance, are producing 300
hours of programming centred around the IPL. The
IPL, in turn, needs the news channels to create a hype around the event. Which
is why the negotiations between the IPL management and the News Broadcasters Association
(NBA) haven't dried up yet. "The
impasse continues with NBA. Trying to resolve. Issue stuck not on news but on
how many shows they can launch around IPL," tweets IPL chairman and commissioner
Lalit Modi.
A
source says Sony has agreed to five minutes of news coverage per hour. "In
the last round of negotiations, the NBA proposed guidelines for five minutes per
hour, equating to 15 minutes a match or a three-fold increase. We agreed on this.
The dispute is over archival footage and that the IPL has control of," he
adds. The
NBA wants seven minutes of archival footage per hour, something which the IPL
is finding it difficult to swallow. Also
