| MUMBAI:
Cricket's push to be a part of the Olympic Games has been helped with the the
International Olympic Committee (IOC) granting recognition to cricket's governing
body, the International Cricket Council (ICC). The
IOC session approved its Executive Boards decision to convert the provisional
recognition of the ICC to full recognition.
The
IOC, at its meeting in Vancouver, also recognised the federations of sport climbing
and power boating. The three sports can now bid to join the 2020 Olympics as the
programme is always determined seven years in advance.
IOC director of communications Mark Adams has been quoted in reports saying that
it could be seen as the first step towards becoming Olympic sports. ICC
CEO Haroon Lorgat said, The ICC is extremely proud of the recognition given
to our great sport by the IOC which we always considered to be our first step
in becoming a part of the Olympic family. At this stage no consideration or decision
has been made regarding participation or applying for approval to participate
in the Olympic Games. |
