    MUMBAI: Setanta Sports, the international sports broadcaster, has agreed a multi-year deal to distribute its exclusive rugby programming on Multi Screen Media?s sports channel Sony Six.

    Sony Six will broadcast live coverage of the RBS Six Nations, Super Rugby and Rugby Championship (formerly Tri Nations) as well as showing Setanta?s flagship rugby programme: The Breakdown.

    "We are delighted to work with Sony SIX to bring our exclusive rugby programming to India. Our goal is to achieve the greatest possible exposure of rugby across the whole of Asia," said Setanta Sports International MD Roger Hall.

    Setanta Sports has extensive distribution for its channel and programming in Asia with deals in Thailand (with TrueVisions), Hong Kong (with Now TV and Hong Kong Broadband), Malaysia and Brunei (with Astro), Singapore (with StarHub and SingTel mio TV), Taiwan (with Dish HD), the Philippines (with SKYcable) and Sri Lanka (with Dialog TV).

    Sony Six has Indian Premier League and Ultimate Fighting Championship as its driving properties in India. It also has FA Cup and NBA to complement its key properties in addition to international football friendlies.

    MUMBAI: Disney XD has teamed with ESPN to uncover sports? biggest myths and mysteries, in the series Disney XD ESPN Sport Science, premiering 29 September on Disney XD.

    Hosted by John Brenkus and Leo Howard, black belt martial artist and star of Disney XD?s hit series "Kickin? It," the short form series brings together professional athletes in state-of-the-art scientific facilities to test the limits of human athletic abilities, while challenging popular assumptions about athletes and sports.

    Combining the best segments of ESPN?s Emmy Award-winning series "ESPN Sport Science," each episode will feature three segments, with Brenkus and Howard using scientific experiments to test topics, including laws of gravity, momentum, size, speed, skill and stamina.

    The series features appearances by NBA stars Dwight Howard (Los Angeles Lakers) and JaVale McGee (Denver Nuggets); NFL stars Vernon Davis (San Franciso 49ers), Larry Fitzgerald (Arizona Cardinals), Jahvid Best (Detroit Lions) and Brandon Jacobs (San Franciso 49ers); former MLB star and current ESPN analyst Nomar Garciaparra; soccer star Zach Thornton; snowboarders Shaun White and Sage Kotsenburg; skateboarder Bob Burnquist; skier Simon Dumont; Olympic softball player Danielle Lawrie and NCAA Basketball player Brittney Griner (Baylor Lady Bears).

    In the premiere episode, "Full Contact, MLB Vision, Flips & Spins," hosts Brenkus and Howard test the impact of a 300-pound heavy bag and showcase how San Francisco 49er Vernon Davis manages incoming forces to block, catch and run; Howard tries to hit a 90-mph fastball and MLB batting champ Nomar Garciaparra tests the reality of keeping an eye on the ball; Howard tries on special eye tracker glasses and investigates how free style skier, Simon Dumont, keeps track of which end is up while flipping in mid-air.

  • DHX Media acquires Cookie Jar in $111 mn deal

    MUMBAI: DHX Media has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the business of Cookie Jar Entertainment to create Canada‘s largest children‘s entertainment company.

    DHX has acquired Cookie Jar at an enterprise value of $111 million, to be paid through a combination of approximately 36 million DHX shares, $5 million in cash, and the assumption of $66 million of debt.

    The combined company will own the world‘s most extensive independent library of children‘s entertainment, including more than 8,550 half hour episodes.

    "The acquisition of Cookie Jar is a transformational event for DHX that will significantly enhance our scale and our growth opportunities," said Michael Donovan, Chief Executive Officer of DHX. "Through this combination, we will strengthen our portfolio of brands, global reach, management depth and our position in the rapidly emerging digital distribution channels to become the market leader."

    Following the closing, Michael Donovan, current CEO of DHX, will continue to serve as CEO. Michael Hirsh, current CEO of Cookie Jar, will become Executive Chairman of DHX. Steven DeNure and Dana Landry will continue in their current roles of President & COO, and Chief Financial Officer, respectively. Cookie Jar‘s current President & COO Toper Taylor will continue to focus on digital distribution and business development. Aaron Ames, CFO of Cookie Jar, will assume the role of Chief Integration Officer reporting directly to the CEO.

    Cookie Jar has a significant content library and features some of the world‘s most recognizable series including Caillou, Inspector Gadget, and Johnny Test. The company controls Cookie Jar TV, the weekend morning block on CBS. Cookie Jar has offices in Toronto, Los Angeles and in addition, throughout Western Europe, as part of its Copyright Promotions Licensing Group, a leading licensor and merchandiser of third party brands and characters.

    Cookie Jar has experienced significant growth in digital distribution, growing revenue from that channel to $8 million in the 12 months ending 31 May. Over the same 12-month period, Cookie Jar had total revenue of $56.7 million and EBITDA of $12.6 million.

  • ESS syndicates ICC rights to Fox Sports, Channel Nine in Australia

    MUMBAI: ESPN Star Sports, the media rights holder for all International Cricket Council events till 2015, has closed a significant broadcast rights deal in Australia with Fox Sports and Channel Nine. The two Australian broadcasters will provide live coverage of every major ICC event from 2012 to 2015, including the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

    Fox Sports will provide live coverage of each tournament during the three-year agreement, including every match of the 2012 and 2014 ICC World T20 events, plus every match in the 2013 Champions Trophy and ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.

    Channel Nine will bring free-to-air viewers the action from all the big games in the 2012 and 2014 World T20 tournaments and again for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 on home soil.

    The agreement covers 2012 and 2014 ICC World Twenty20, 2013 ICC Champions Trophy and, world cricket‘s premier event, the 2015 ICC World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

    Fox Sports CEO Patrick Delany said, "We are delighted to be partnering with Channel Nine and the ICC and are looking forward to delivering live and high definition coverage of all major international cricket tournaments to complement our exclusive coverage of Australia‘s international tours and national competitions including the KFC T20 Big Bash League.

    "Last year we delivered an immersive Rugby World Cup experience, going beyond the live match coverage to tell the entire story of the tournament through our presence in and around the venues, fans, and Wallabies camp in New Zealand. The 2015 Cricket World Cup will be the biggest cricket event to hit our shores in over 20 years and we plan to offer fans the complete package."

    Channel Nine MD Jeffrey Browne, said: "Nine‘s Wide World of Sports and big-time cricket are synonymous and to ultimately have the 2015 ICC World Cup played at home in Australia as part of this new deal is both a challenge and celebration we very much look forward to."
