CANNES: Guess how many metres of red carpet were used during the Cannes film festival? If you guessed 6,000 metres you were right on the button. The staff who work at the Palais des Festivals Grand Theatre Lumiere where the main competition screenings are held change close to 200 metres of the red carpet at least three times daily after almost every major evening screening. For the 60th anniversary of the festival the Palais des Festivals' management chose a four metre wide bright red carpet with the sides being adorned with a theatre red carpet.

THE RED CARPET: Where the stars and star struck love to tread at Cannes.

Each carpet change between the performance takes about 30 minutes, with the roads holding the carpet being removed and the carpet itself being junked immediately. The hardest part for the people who lay out the carpet is making it iron straight in the time they have to remove the old one and lay out the new one.

But it's something that has to be done, so it is. For clearly, it is the star of the festival as it is the most photographed red carpet in the world. Apart from the stars themselves, the red carpet at Cannes is clearly the other star of the festival.
