| CANNES:
Wong Kar Wai's My Blueberry Nights passed muster. A large
gathering of journalists today gave it a thumbs up. The post
screeening press conference had none of the baiting questions
that last year's overture film The Da Vinci Code did
last year. In fact, most of the questions at the conference
were downright friendly, almost obsequious and genuflecting
of a master film maker. They focused on his craft, on his and
the cast's thought process, rather than on negative questions.
And yes Norah Jones too got the green chit as an actress. Even
against experienced actors of the likes of Jude Law, Rachel
Weisz and Natalie Portman.
Wong
Kar Wai said that he opted for Norah because he liked her
voice and he wanted to portray her as an actress, not as a
singer. Both Jude Law and Norah said that the film making
process with Kar Wai was a process of improvisation, and they
got a chance to build their characters of Elizabeth and Jeremy
as they were involved in the characterisation. "
That's
what made us identify with them so strongly," they said."Though
I had never run before, in preparation for the movie I did
to get the experience of pain and the grit and determination
that is needed, said Law."
Jones
added that she was very nervous to be acting against such
experienced actors but Kar Wai and the rest of the cast helped
cool her down and get comfortable with the role as it required
her to be. "And she grew with the role," says Kar
Wai.
The
movie's official premiere is slated for later tonight and
the star cast of Kar Wai, Jones and Law are slated to walk
the red carpet.
