I&B allocates Rs 4.5 billion for Films Division

MUMBAI: The information and broadcasting (I&B) ministry has allocated Rs 4.5 billion for the Films Division in the 11th plan. An amount of Rs 2 billion has been earmarked for various works which include setting up a Centre of Excellence in Animation, Gaming and Visual Effects.

A Centre of Excellence in Animation, Gaming and Visual Effects would be set up at a cost of Rs 500 million, said I&B ministry joint secretary V B Pyarelal.

"The Ministry has also planned to upgrade the Film and Television Institute, Pune to International level at a cost of Rs 500 million," he said.

It has kept aside Rs 420 million for upgradation of Satyajit Ray Film Institute in Kolkata. The ministry is also planning to set up a museum on Film and TV in Mumbai, for which Rs 500 million will be infused.

Besides Rs 300 million would be donated to National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) for its development and Rs 200 million for production of documentary movies.

Meanwhile, Pyarelal said that no prints of India’s first sound film 'Alam Ara' are available with the National Archives of India. He said only pictures and media photographs of the movie are with the National Archives of India.
