MUMBAI:
Four years after it was made, Superman of Malegaon,
the documentary that focuses on the film industry of
Malegaon, is finally going to release on 29 June by
PVR Cinemas.
Made
in 2008 by Faiza Ahmad Khan, Supermen of Malegaon showcases
the town's people coming together for the 2009-made
film Yeh Hai Malegaon Ka Superman. In fact, the documentary
traces the making of the film on a budget of a mere
Rs 100,000.
Ironically,
shortly after the film was completed, Shafique Shaikh,
the lead actor of the film, lost a battle to cancer.
Malegaon,
a power loom town of Maharashtra, located nearly 300
km away from Mumbai, is home to a unique film industry.
It makes low-budget films and spoofs of popular Bollywood
and Hollywood films. Some of the notable films have
been films like Malegaon Ka Ghajani, Malegaon Ki Shaan
and Malegaon Ka Sholay.
The
documentary has won awards at several film festivals
across the world including Indian Film Festival in
Los Angeles, Silverdocs Documentary Festival and the
Asian Film Festival, Rome.
