MUMBAI: All the four releases last week - Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge, Road,
Movie, Rokk and Thanks Maa - got off to a slow start.
Amongst
them, Atithi
got the best opening, mostly because it has Paresh Rawal.
The promotion was done in such a way that it looked like a comedy film. The
film is a satire. It takes a dig at housemaids, gangsters and above all film folks.
So much so, a parody in the form of a bhajan of the Omkara hit Beedi Jalaile has
been put in. With
an opening of approximately 30 per cent, Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge has done
better business than the rest of the films. It opened to a response at between
40 to 50 per cent and reportedly did a net business of Rs 22.5 million on the
very first day. The film did average business on Saturday and Sunday. Studio18's
Road, Movie had a dull start of 15 to 20 per cent. The film did well only
in the morning shows with the younger crowd coming in, but occupancy stayed pretty
low even in the multiplexes. Thanks
Maa had an average opening in cities like Mumbai and Delhi while it has fared
badly elsewhere. Inadequate publicity and also a limited release is being cited
as the cause of the film not opening well. The
supernatural thriller Rokk too failed to thrill the audiences. Averred
Cinemax vice president Devang Sampat, "Out of all the four films, Atithi
Tum Kab Jaoge has done well. The film is bound to improve on word-of-mouth
publicity." |
