February 2002
Birthdays are more than just dates. They are landmarks which
allow one to take stock. To look back. To look ahead. At indiantelevision.com
it was business as usual though. No frills, no rah rahs. There's simply
too much to be done. And too little time.
Still, two years is a long time in the life of any organisation. More
so for one which has worked and progressed on the adage of substance being
the core premise rather than style. So here is a brief run-through of
where we are at now.
25 February 2000: indiantelevision.com was launched officially at the
hands of Zee Telefilms Ltd chairman Subhash Chandra in a cybercafe in
Mumbai. A small beginning.
25 February 2002: Indiantelevision.com has evolved into an information
and television services company, with many firsts to its credit.
It is the leading information and news destination for Indian media planners/buyers,
marketers, TV professionals, foreigners interested in India's complex
cable and satellite television market, and the Indian diaspora overseas.
It organised the first ever Indian television awards on 6 July 2001 with
backing from Channel Nine, Sony Entertainment, Star India and Zee Telefilms.
The Indian Telly Awards were a roaring success and the show was aired
on Star Plus on 9 September 2001.
It organised the first ever TV Scriptwriters Workshop & Forum - Qalam
2001 - with support from BAG Films, Balaji Telefilms, Sony Entertainment,
and Star India. 110 wannabe scriptwriters attended. Qalam 2001 was hailed
as a success and 14 scriptwriters are undergoing regular training at indiantelevision.com's
office in Mumbai at no cost to the participants.
It
is organising India's first TV Air Time Selling, Planning and Buying Forum
- AdWise 2002 on 8 March 2002 in Mumbai. Leading advertising agencies,
marketers, and ad sales professionals in television are expected to attend.
It is the online partner for leading industry body Ficci's Frames 2002.
There it is. And to re-emphasise our substance over style premise a look
back at what we said when we turned One is worth recounting:
"We have continuously expanded news coverage, interactive areas, launched
specialised newsletters, rejigged the site design and feel, and are looking
at expanding into newer areas - both online and offline web-enabled activities.
The next two months are going to see the site undergo another bout of
extensive surgery. And we are excited by the prospect of further change.
We are committed to indiantelevision.com and we have stuck by our vision
despite naysayers who have questioned our credentials and the road map
we have set for ourselves. What keeps us going is our dogged belief that
we will make it work. And that belief coarses through all of us."
"We are confident that we are going to survive the dot com bloodbath that
is to come over the next year, with God and the industry's grace. May
the force be with us."
The force has certainly been with us. And we have not fallen short on
the challenges that came our way.
According to Indian Television Media Information Founder & CEO Anil Wanvari,
the company has however, still a long way to go. "We have just started
out on our journey; there are so many things to be done. India's television
industry is in its nascent stage. It is going to evolve and have many
requirements during that evolution. Our vision is to evolve with it and
provide some of the services it needs."
Wanvari acknowledges that the company would not have managed to get as
far as it has had it not been for the active support of the indiantelevision.com
team. "Industry has also recognised the role we are playing and has supported
all our efforts. I am grateful to each of the individuals who has lent
a hand to us."
Footnote: indiantelevision.com has its origins in a single page that Wanvari
wrote (in html) in October 1996, which later evolved into http://www.indiantelevision.com
in April 1999, until its official launch on 25 February.
